![]() ![]() The map below depicts some of the Gallic territory around the 1st Century BCE, with the Helvetii tribe inhabiting much of area in and around the Swiss Alps. Needless to say, the history of the Gauls provided a great opportunity to ground the game’s design in something more tangible. ![]() ![]() It provided an overview of the Gallic wars between the Roman Empire and the tribes of Gauls across much of what is southern France southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland today - incidentally nestled within the very same river valleys of the Rhine and Rhone rivers! (As a total aside I’ve also been formulating a secret plan to backpack from the headwaters of the Rhine to the headwaters of the Rhone river, shhhhh). Granted, T&E and Y&Y are both quite abstract as far as modern hobby games go, but their settings nevertheless lend a touch of history to the overall gameplay experience.īy happenstance, and sometime well after my initial blog post unveiling this game idea, I listened to an episode of Dan Carlin’s Hardscore History called the Celtic Holocost. But I needed a clearer setting in which to ground the game beyond just the river names and geographic region. Rhine & Rhone has a nice ring to it, and of course geographically fits into the Knizia trend quite nicely. Lake Toma (Tomasee) is the official headwaters of the Rhine river. ![]()
